In Burma, my last name would be pronounced gee, halfway between chee, like cheese, and gee, like gee whiz. The trouble is if you say gee just a little bit wrong and you say chee by accident, it means the bad word for poop in Burmese. After a few weeks in North America, my father-in-law decided, "I don't like being called Mr. Poop," and he changed the way he pronounced his name, and we became the Kyi family.
