Simran Singh: Hi, my name is Simran Jeet Singh. I was named for an activist, and my parents had this hope that I, like this activist, would grow up and give back to the community that I belong to. My last name, Singh, is a very common last name among Sikhs, actually. Fauja Singh has the same last name. The idea there is that everyone is part of the same family; we're all equal. So our last names reflect that. So Sikh men typically carry the same last name of Singh, which is a royal last name, and women have the last name Kaur, K-A-U-R. That is to indicate this idea of familyhood, but also to push back against patriarchy and say women are not the property of men. They don't need to change their last names when they get married. So my wife, and my daughters, and my mother, they're all Kaurs, K-A-U-R. It's also a royal last name. And myself, and Fauja Singh, and my brothers, we're all Singhs.
