Suzanne Young: Hi, this is Suzanne Young, I am the author of the Girls with Sharp Sticks trilogy and the final book, Girls with Rebel Souls, is out now. Girls with Sharp Sticks is about a group of friends in an all-girls boarding school. And when one of the girls goes missing, they investigate and find out the truth about the Academy and the truth about themselves. The third book, as the final installment, is the chance for them to understand what the world outside of the Academy is like, and more to the point of what humans are like in this outside world. So it becomes a challenge for them wanting to save themselves and also wanting to save other people, and I kind of like that push and pull of selflessness that they have to endure.
My favorite part of the series is definitely the female friendship, the bond that these girls have is not only unbreakable, but it is the source of their strength. So everything they go through, they rely on each other to lift themselves up. But also by bonding together, they're able to pretty much take down this corporation that is doing everything they can to strip them of their power. So I just love the dynamics of this friendship. What a great message that is for empowerment for girls all over.
When readers finish the series I hope they take away the power of friendship, power of working with allies. So the girls not only have each other that they're working with, but you also get to see some of the younger men in the book, how they are standing up to this system rather than continuing to go along with it. This system of the patriarchy, essentially. So I really like how you can depend on your allies. You can depend on your friends and together we can build something new. We can create something better and I think that's the message I hope they take away from it.
I think what I really hope for my readers is that, I know it's not always easy to find the kind of companionship you'll see in this book. But I hope it gives them encouragement to strive towards it, to maybe be there for someone else who's in trouble or to be there for themselves. It was a journey to tell the story of what these girls have gone through, knowing that this is something that people in real life go through and just looking at the ways that we can change society.
