Amra Sabic-El-Rayess: Hello, my name is Amra Sabic-El-Rayess. My first name, Amra, is an Arabic Muslim name. It means princess. While I grew up in a loving family in my old country, some of my teachers targeted me for being Muslim. So I certainly didn't feel like a princess. Despite being one of the top students in the country, I never once read a story or solved a word problem in math where Amra, or any Muslim girl, was the main character. I was made to feel invisible.

For my middle name, I don't have one. But I have a long double hyphenated last name where Sabic is the Bosnian portion of my last name. And S and C would have accents in Bosnian, to be read like SHU and CHU. El-Rayess is my husband's last name, and it is Egyptian.
