Hyewon Yum: Hi. This is Hyewon Yum and I'm the author and illustrator of Puddle. I'm going to tell you a bit about how I came to create this book; then I'll share a page spread with you.
When my son is young, everyday we go out to the park; but on rainy days, we couldn't go out to play. After we were done with all the toys, blocks, and books, I told him stories. Sometimes, we drew pictures together. The thing is, he didn't really like drawing. That's how I made up this story; it all started from when I drew a picture of an umbrella and invited him to the sketch book. The best part of this story was my mad face. He laughed and laughed when I drew my mad face on the sketch book. That made me so happy, I wanted to share this experience with readers.
Now, I will discuss a page spread. It's the page that shows mom's mad face. As her boy splashed water all over her, mom said, "I said, not to go in there! Now, you're all wet, and I am too." Now mom is really upset because she is in the story, herself. And boy said this, "Mom, it's just a picture! Don't get mad!" Gently, remind mom that it's just a story that they made together.
I love this spread because it shows how they walk into the story together and also how they made the story together.
