Arnold Adolf: Hi, this is Arnold Adolf, husband of novelist and folklorist, Virginia Hamilton. Her name is Virginia Ester Hamilton and she was named for the state of Virginia, in a long ago place of slavery.
Her grandfather was brought across the Ohio River as an infant by an unknown woman working within the underground railroad system while the Civil War was still raging. Actually, as the years went on and she tried to find the true roots of her Hamilton and Perry family, she was able to discover that part of her heritage is Amer-Indian, as she used the term, and traced herself back to some of the slave plantations in Virginia and the Potawatomi Indians who lived nearby.
