Claire A. Nivola: Hello. My name is Claire Nivola. Originally, on my birth certificate, my name was Chiara Adriana Nivola. When I was in high school, I changed it to Claire because I had stopped using Chiara because everyone pronounced it Chiara, which I didn't like. And I was worried that if I was called Claire and it said Chiara on my birth certificate, that would be a legal problem, which wasn't the case, and I wished I had never changed it.

The other thing about my name is that it comes from the island of Sardinia, which is part of Italy, and in Italian, one would pronounce the name Nivola, with the accent on the first syllable. But, in fact, in Sardinia, it's pronounced Nivola, the way you would pronounce it in America. And so, it's funny that people who know Italian think they are getting it right by pronouncing it Nivola, when, in fact, Americans are getting it right by calling Nivola.
