Françoise Mouly: Hello. My name is Francoise Mouly, and it's Francoise, not Francois, because Francois refers to male French people, and Francoise is not a name that I especially like, but I didn't realize until it was too late that I could change my name. When I came to the US, I could easily have said, "Hello, my name is Albertine," and that's one of the things that you can do in America.

But I naively have been spending 20 years saying, "No, no, it's Francoise, not Francois." It has one advantage, which is that when the phone ring at my house, and the kids pick up, and somebody is asking for "Frankozy," I can tell them they can hang up. It's not somebody who knows me.
