Jeannie Baker: Hi. My name is Jeannie Baker. When I was born, my parents had trouble finding a name for me that they could both agree on. My father wanted to call me Irene, but my mother thought Irene would get shortened to Reenie, a name she hated. So they compromised and called me Jeannie. My parents decided not to give me a middle name as they'd found it so hard to agree on my first name. When I was 17 I went to art college. On my first day there, my teacher read out my name pronouncing it Jenny. I quite liked that name so I didn't correct her. And so I went through my years at art college being known as Jenny. But when I finished art school I decided I quite liked and preferred my given name, Jeannie, and it's the name everyone knows me by now. I was born in England and grew up there, but now my home is in Australia where my husband was born. When I go back to England, everyone there thinks I speak with an Australian accent. But here in Australia people think I sound very English.
