Wick Downing: Hello. My name is Wick Downing. I was named after my granddad. My real name is Warwick. The reason I don't really particularly being called Warwick is because it seems to describe somebody that I'm not. My granddad, who is a man that I greatly admired, was a lawyer. And he was just the old, tough, table-pounding kind who knew how to dominate and control. I'm also a lawyer, but I've never been able to dominate and control anything or anybody, especially juries. They just seem to go off on their own whenever I try a case, which I don't do much of anymore.
So my name is Wick. That's a nickname for Warwick, and I like it. I like being kind of known as Wick. It seems to describe me a whole lot better. And I think part of the reason I so enjoy writing is because it gives me this opportunity to reinvent myself, and to be who I am, rather that who I'm named after. And I reinvent myself very frequently.
