Mary Ann Hoberman: Hello. My name is Mary Ann Hoberman. Ever since I was a little girl, I've had a lot of trouble with the "Mary Ann" because Mary, M-A-R-Y, and Ann, A-N-N, are two words, but they're both my first name. And not only that, I don't have a middle name. So whenever I went to school or someplace else, people would start by calling me Mary because, of course, they thought that Mary was my first name and Ann was my middle name.
Finally, when I got to junior high school, I decided that I was going to change my name, so that Mary Ann was spelled as one word. So I figured out that I would make it a French spelling, M-A-R-I-A-N-N-E. Now the French pronounce that Maryahn. But I did that for a while and that confused people anymore, because they didn't know quite how to pronounce it. So I finally went back to Mary Ann, two words, and made the corrections when people called me Mary and now everybody calls me Mary Ann and that's who I am. I'm Mary Ann Hoberman.
