Hope Jahren: My name is Hope Jahren, and my last name is a Norwegian name. In the U.S. where I grew up, we pronounce it Jahren rhymes with Karen. In Norway, we pronounce it Yaren.

My name is the same name as a woman, my same age, who won a gold medal at the Olympics. So, sometimes people see my name, and they don't know me, and they hope we might be the same person, but then they find out I am not a great skier. I try to make up for it by being extra friendly when it happens.
