Gomera-Tavarez: Hello, my name is Camille Gomera-Tavarez.

GO as in go, green lights, and Tavarez, not Taverez. So AH, like do re mi fa so.

So my first name, Camille, is French, pronounced CA-MEE in French and CA-MEEL in Spanish. And I have two last names because I have two parents, and this is common in Latin America to keep both last names, but also it's common in Dominican Republic, specifically, for women to keep their names when they get married. So my mom kept her last name.

I don't really look like her, because even though she's mixed, she's more fair-skinned, she has straight hair. So when we came to America, I, at first, just had my father's last name, and a lot of people, immigration and in the airport, didn't believe that she was my mother. So after that point, when I was little, my mom made it a point to change my paperwork and legally changed me and my brother's names so that we both had her last name, so that doing paperwork and being with her in public and stuff would be a lot easier.

And as I grow older, I've sort of reclaimed it, and so has my brother, as being this powerful thing, just knowing my family history and having it in my name and acknowledging my ancestors by keeping those last names and fully knowing all of the names that I have, which I know a couple. So my full name is Camille Michel Gomera Tavarez Reyes Ventura Lorenzo Garcia. So that's as far back as I know, but I feel like a lot of people don't have that. So I feel lucky to know my ancestors in that way.
