Ilene Cooper: Hi, my name is Ilene Cooper, but my name wasn't originally Cooper. When my grandparents came over from Ukraine, my grandfather's last name was Kugel. Kugel means pudding in Yiddish, more specifically, noodle pudding. My grandparents weren't married at the time. My grandfather proposed to my grandmother on the boat and she said, "Well, I'd like to marry you, but I really don't want to go through life as Bell Noodle Pudding." Fortunately, when they got to Ellis Island, the official there changed my grandfather's last name from Kugel to Cooper, and my grandmother finally said, " Yes."
