Eleanor Ramrath Garner: Hello. My name is Eleanor Ramrath Garner, author of Eleanor's Story: an American Girl in Hitler's Germany.

I am both writer and artist. I use my maiden name, Ramrath, to distinguish my work from my artist son's, who uses my married name, Garner. The name Ramrath is German, and goes back to the eleventh century, or even earlier. The name underwent many metamorphoses over the centuries from old German spelling to modern German.

Einrath, or "advisor," was something like a lawyer. One side of the family added a double M to the spelling of Ramrath, but double M or single M, we are all somehow related and come from the area of Westphalia and the Sauerland.
