Idina Menzel: Hi, I'm Idina Menzel. I spell it I-D-I-N-A. The reason ... I've heard a lot ... there's a couple Adinas that I've met, but I've never met an Adina that spells it with an I. Now that is because in the Jewish religion, a lot of times we name our kids after someone who's passed away, and we use the first letter. So my mom named me after my great-grandmother, Ida, but she loved the name Adina, so she made it an I, which sometimes is very confusing for people, because it's Adina, and then they put the A. Or other times they say my name like Indiana or just lots of crazy things. And it's funny because ... and everyone where I grew up on Long Island actually says I-dina, which is not the way my name is pronounced, but when I was younger I would just allow people to say my name like that, even though I knew that I didn't like it like that.
So when I got to college, I made myself a vow that, from now on, I was going to correct people. Because at first I felt uncomfortable correcting people. I didn't want to make them feel badly. But then I realized that we all should have our name said the way that we want to say it. So now it's funny if I'm walking on the street and someone says, "Hi, I-dina," I know that they're from my past. So that's funny. And also, in Hebrew, it means gentle, which I like a lot, because sometimes people don't realize I'm gentle, because I have this big, loud voice, and I speak up for myself a lot. But at home, in my own private time, I think I am kind of gentle.
