Tasha Spillett-Sumner: Hi, my name is Tasha Kali Perrier Spillett-Sumner. Those are all the names that I've carried through my life, and when I say them all back to back it's definitely a mouthful.

Tasha comes from Natasha, which comes from Anastasia, from my understanding, which is Russian and it means born at Christmas.
I am not Russian at all, but I am born just before Christmas. I was born on Christmas Eve. And Kali from my understanding means the dark goddess or the goddess of destruction. And then my surnames come from a few different people and places. I carry my mother's, both of her maiden name and then also her father's last name. And then my husband's last name too. So it's interesting, there's lots in a name. I think of all the people that we carry with us through our names.

I also have a cultural name, which is {Cree language} which means White Dove Woman. I've carried that name with me since I was two or three years old. It's an ancestral name that was given to me by an Elder who has now passed on from Algonquin First Nation. It's really helped me to remind myself of the role that I have in my community, which I feel is to be a peacekeeper, a bridge-maker, a gatherer of people. That's all the names that I carry.
