Patricia C. McKissack: Hello. My name is Patricia Leanna Carwell McKissack. There was a popular actress at the time I was born by the name of Patricia Neal and my mother loved Patricia and said, "I think I'll name my daughter that." My name is Patricia but most people call me Pat. Leanna, that was my great-grandmother's name. My paternal grandmother's mother's name was Leanna Baldwin. And, I am named Leanna after her. Carwell is my maiden name. Carwell, and it's spelled C-A-R-W-E-L-L. And, I think it used to be Caldwell, C-A-L-D-W-E-L-L, but I think after slavery, my family tried to distinguish themselves as the black Caldwells, named it C-A-R-W-E-L-L. Or, they were spelling it the way it sounded to them. McKissack, I married Frederick McKissack 43 years ago, so I've been a McKissack longer than I was a Carwell.
