In Chinese custom, a woman is known by her husband's last name only when Mrs. goes before the name, otherwise she retains her birth name. So as Wu was fond of correcting people, she was Mrs. Yuan but Professor Wu. She didn't like to be called Professor Yuan because Yuan was her husband's last name. And I kind of feel like similarly that's what I did. So my Chinese name remains my birth Chinese name as given by my father, and my English name, I go by my husband's last name.
