Malaka Gharib: Hello, my name is Malaka Gharib. My name means strange queen in Arabic. It's actually the name of my grandmother, Malaka, which means queen and my grandfather, Gharib, that's his first name. In the Arab world and in the Muslim world your last name is actually the first name of your father. So my father, when he moved to the United States, he decided not to carry that tradition over. So his name is Maged Gharib. Gharib was the name of his father. And so really in the Arab world my name should be Malaka Maged, but we decided to Americanize it so my name is Malaka Gharib. Malaka, the way that I pronounce it, is actually not the real pronunciation of my name. It's Malaka in Arabic, but my mom, who's Filipino, couldn't pronounce Malaka, so she pronounced it Malaka, and that's how I pronounce my name because I grew up with my mother, I pronounced my name the way that my mother calls me it. And my last name is pronounced Gharib, like in Arabic, so it's a happy mix.
