Betty Quan: Hi. My name is Betty Quan, which is spelled Q-U-A-N. I've come across Quans spelt K-W-A-N, Q-U-O-N, K-W-O-N. When different waves of immigrants came to North America, immigrant officials may have tried to phonetically spell out a Chinese name. In high school, a history teacher told me that he thought my last name might be descended from Khan, spelt K-H-A-N. You might be familiar with the name Khan from Star Trek, or if you're a history buff, from the name of the founder of the Mongol empire. I think it's interesting how our last names can contain a lot of history.
