Charlotte Jones Voiklis: Madeleine L'Engle. Hello. My name is Charlotte Jones Voiklis, and my grandmother was Madeleine L'Engle, whose best known book is A Wrinkle In Time. L'Engle is actually her middle name. She was born Madeleine L'Engle Camp. But her father had been a journalist and novelist, and she didn't want to be in his shadow. So when she published her first book, A Small Rain, in 1945, she used L'Engle, which was her great grandmother's name. The L'Engles were French Huguenots, Protestants who fled religious persecution in the 16th century, and settled in what is now St. Augustine, Florida.
