Dianne Hofmeyr: Hello, my name is Dianne Hofmeyr. My surname is South African, but it has its origins in Germany. I say "Hofmayor", but here in London in the United Kingdom where I live, most people say, "Hofmeyer."

I think in America, people would also say "Hofmeyer." It's a name that goes far back in history. When the Romans left their [inaudible] in Europe, the Franks, that were later known as Germans, took over. And they appointed various rulers. And in the northern regions, these rulers were known as half mayors, which roughly translated into English means 'head official'. But the odd name about my name is it's spelling. I find it quite funny that people often try to correct me, and wanting a certain extra 'E' between the 'Y' and the 'R' at the end, and often ask me," Are you quite sure? Is that the way you spell it?"

So, either way, 'Hofmeyor', or 'Hofmayor', I don't mind. Say it which ever way you prefer.
