Elizabeth Wein: Hello. My name is Elizabeth Wein. It's spelled W-E-I-N, but pronounced with a long E sound, just like weird. It looks like it's German, and half my family is Pennsylvania German.

But in fact, Wein, is what I call an Ellis Island special. The VEINS were Russian, and the name was originally Velic. When the immigration official at Ellis Island wrote down Wein, the family said, "Right, new country, new name."

My friends call me E Wein. The easy way to remember it is that Wein rhymes with teen.
