Fern Schumer Chapman: Hello. My name is Fern Schumer Chapman. My name, Fern, comes from my grandmother. In the Jewish religion, we name babies with the same initial. And in my case, I'm named after Freida Westerfeld, F, for Fern. That is quite fitting, because all of my writing is based upon my personal history. My grandmother, Freida, made the most painful choice any parent could make, by deciding that she needed to send her daughter, my mother, Edith, away from Nazi Germany into America all by herself. My mother was only 12 years old. So I think it's very fitting that I'm named for Freida, because I honor her in my daily living and also in my writing.
