Faith Ringgold: Hello, my name is Faith Ringgold. My name comes from the nurse who assisted my mother when I came into the world. I was born in 1930 at Harlem Hospital, at a time when babies were getting mixed up. Therefore, one had to be named before you leave the delivery room. So, my mother figured that I would be a little boy and she would call me Ralph. Well, I was a little girl, and so she didn't have a name for me. The nurse, seeing that my mother was very depressed about this, suggested that my mother call me Faith. As a child, I got teased a lot about having that name, they would call me Faith, Hope, and Charity.
