Kathi Appelt: Hello, my name is Kathi Appelt. I married into the Appelt clan and since my maiden name was Cowgill, that's C-O-W-G-I-L-L, I very happily changed it to my husband's softer sounding name. The whole time I was growing up, my sisters and I were constantly called the Cowgirls, which didn't matter a whole lot when I was small, because I loved horses and actually I really wanted to grow up to be a cowgirl. But, once I hit those teenage years, being a cowgirl just seemed a little embarrassing. So, here I am, a very proud Appelt, and in fact I've been an Appelt now longer than I was a Cowgill. Oh, and it's not Katherine or Katerina or Kate. It's just Kathi. Kathi Appelt.
